Rioja Reservas deserve age and they cannot be beaten on value. The 2006 Viña Tondonia is a classic, full Rioja but has a lovely elegance and subtlety to it. It is a fine example of what a mature, high quality Rioja Reserva should be like.
The López de Heredia wines have become true gems, increasingly cherished by the critiics and wine lovers. Until the early naughties these wines were hard to get hold of outside of Spain but fortunately that has changed. However, the wines are only released when ready and there can be large breaks between vintages such as the mythical Tondonia Gran Reserva Blanco which kept its fans waiting between 2000 and 2008. The wines are a benchmark for tradition, classic Riojan style. An in-house cooperage allows this winery to personalise their oak character, thending towards using old barrels from mostly American oak where the wines slowly age according to the DO restrictions.
