Producer Notes
Álvaro Palacios is one of the leading winemakers who started a not-so-small revolution in the 1980s. Energetic and passionate, as well as a media-friendly maverick, he has become a true celebrity in the world of Spanish wine. From a winemaking family in Rioja, he went to work at Chateau Petrus and on returning to Spain, he travelled down to Priorat, a beautifully rugged region located in an isolated backward hinterland in Southern Catalonia that had been known for supplying holy wine to the Catholic church. With a group of friends (René Barbier, José Luis Pérez, Carles Pastrana and Daphne Glorian) they began to make a new wave of Priorat wines: dark, powerful and concentrated and a huge hit in the US. Over the years the wines have become more refined without losing their minerality. And whilst l’Hermita is now the most expensive sold wine from Spain, other larger volume wines have been released from the same winery and Palacios is currently in charge of a small wine kingdom which produces some of the best labels from Bierzo, Rioja and Priorat.
