Wine Notes
The 2006 Valdicava needed time. When young it had a tendency to be too tightly knit, closed even, but the time in bottle has softened and mellowed the tannins to reveal dark fruit, leather and smoke in abundance.
Brunello benefits from age and Valdicavaโs 2006 vintage has a hefty backbone to it that will keep it going for another 5 years. Full of dark berry fruit with notes of leather and a smokey finish.
Producer Notes
Although Valdicava have been producing Brunello since the 1950โs it is only in the last 20 years that their reputation as a top class producer has emerged. Located in the north of the Montalcino region they focus entirely on Sangiovese and produce three wines: a Rosso, a Brunello, and in good years a Riserva, the single-vineyard Madonna Del Piano. The current owner and winemaker, Vincenzo Abbruzzese, is fairly particular about his wines and appears happy to declassify his Brunellos to Rossos if the wine is not showing enough ageing potential before release. This works in the inverse as well: some years the fruit will be of a quality that no Rosso will be made as the majority of the harvest is used for Brunello.
