Producer Notes
Jorge Monzón, the winemaker and founder of Dominio del Aguila has really rocked the traditional winemaking boat of Ribera del Duero, breaking away from the shiny and new style that the region was becoming known for. Having already worked at DRC and Vega Sicilia he decided to reestablish the balance between traditional winemaking and modern technical knowledge. How? Selecting well balanced old vineyards (up to 150 years old), farming organically and biodynamically and respecting the terroir, rather than trying to force it out of the land. The wines of Dominio del Aguila, made with Jorge’s partner Isabel are “village wines” from plots around the village of La Aguilera, mostly Tempranillo but other varieties such as Garnacha, Bobal, Albillo and Blanca del Pais can be found. This innovative young couple are not afraid of the DO restrictions and produce an extraordinary white wine from the prohibited Albillo variety.
A producer to keep a close eye on over the coming years.
