Producer Notes
The Massolino family have been growing grapes in Piedmont since the 1900’s but only began bottling wines under their own name after the second world war. They have since become a well-respected estate known for their high end single-vineyard Barolos, including from the coveted Vigna Rionda cru.
The wines have gone through a recognised evolutionary timetable with the wines being made in the traditional style with a brief foray into modernism during the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. Most notably was the single vineyard Parafada that they began ageing in small Barriques in 1996, as is the modernist style in Barolo. In 2006 they went back to the more traditional style of large oak casks.
The average age of the vines in the single vineyard Barolos is nearing the 50 year mark and the depth and concentration of flavour is noticeable in these wines. For the blended Barolo the plants are between 10 and 45 years old and the balance of fresh, bright fruit with the more concentrated complex notes works well.
