Producer Notes
Vieux Chateau Certan was built around 1800, so it’s quite old but not as old as some.
Owned by the Thienpont family, it is consistently one of the most elegant Pomerol wines and, quite unlike its neighbour Le Pin, owned by another member of the Thienpont family, which is of the heavier, more modern style of Pomerol.
So if you have a case of Le Pin, we suggest that you sell it and buy lots of cases of Vieux Chateau Certan instead. The Certan will probably last longer too.
The vineyard is planted with 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon but the Grand Vin blend is varied more than most clarets according to the success of each varietal in that particular vintage, a practice that should be more widespread.
There is a second wine called La Gravette de Certan.
