Piedmontese Nebbiolo Mixed Case

This is a fine example of a relaxed, approachable Barolo with plenty of kick to it. Lots of dark fruit with a touch of sweetness that is brought back by the herbaceaous edge that carries a little mint. Although young for a Barolo this has started to develop well and is fairly open already.

Sandrone is one of the most revered producers in Barolo and his wines are expertly balanced, elegant and always bright. His Nebbiolo d’Alba is a slight move away from his flagship Barolos with a more fruity and refreshing style but still offers great value and high quality. Some years stand out for offering much more complexity and depth than expected and 2013 was one of them.

Incredibly light in colour this Carema, although a riserva, really highlights the lightness of Nebbiolo from Alto Piemonte. The colour is amusingly deceptive though as this has a lovely weight and texture and plenty of verve. Earthy with a floral nose but a touch of spice on the palate that marries well with the bright acidity.

Subtle notes of mint are not uncommon in Piedmont wines but this Spanna offers up a wonderful peppermint nose that comes through on the palate. Soft, ripe tannins, dark ruby in colour and much richer than expected but still has that racy Nebbiolo acidity. As per the DOC regulations a small quantity (10-30%) of Vespolina is blended with the Spanna (Nebbiolo).
